Introduction

Basin IT is a simple analytical model developed to facilitate capacity building through training in integrated water resources management in a river basin context. The training tool allows the user to develop policy scenarios by adjusting the supply side (water availability) and demand side (water requirements) to determine potential socioeconomic and environmental impacts from the proposed management decision. The program therefore provides a framework through which to analyze current and future development scenarios for water resources development and management from various stakeholder perspectives and from an integrated perspective for the basin as a whole.

Basin IT models an artificial basin using data from a few different actual river basins. A limited number of variables that affect river basin planning are used in the program to simplify key concepts of basin water planning. In an interactive option, users can analyze the economic benefits, environmental requirements, and any other factors, for a combination(s) of development scenarios. The software currently runs on Windows operating system.
