Description: The Doppler effect allows a radar to determine the particle speed along the radar beam. As particles move towards/away from the radar, there is a shift in frequency which is proportional to the windspeed. This allows for the measurement of winds moving towards/away from the radar along a given radar beam. By looking at Doppler winds, one can infer the wind speed and direction at any point in the radar scope providing returns. To completely resolve winds in three componts (U,V,W), multiple Doppler radars are required to measure a given air space. Doppler winds are likely the most underutilized output of most radars, though it is critical in detecting wind shear most commonly associated with Tornados.
