One of the governance initiatives that is being closely watched is the deployment of national digital IDs (e.g. the Aadhar system in India) that can be used as a basis to empower millions without formal identity that prevents them from accessing a range of benefits including being in the formal economy by opening Bank accounts. Although privacy issues are a concern, these systems are being deployed in innovative ways to target subsidies more effectively and open up a range of government and private services to every individual based on their digital ID. Once issues of privacy and sovereignty are better addressed, perhaps there could be a future “global” Digital ID that can make current Passports and Visas obsolete and that can be the foundation of a new interlinked global economy.
