Staff Gauge

Description: A staff gauge is a permanent vertical or inclined board used as a visual indication of water level. The staff gauge is installed to cover the full range of water level with incremental visual markers typically every centimeter. The staff gauge is used as reference to a chosen datum such as elevation or an arbitrary datum. The staff gauge lowest increment at zero flow should be numbered well above zero to avoid the chance of the datum going into negative numbers.

Staff gauges are used in almost all bodies of water (reservoirs, rivers, canals, stilling wells, etc.) as a reference to the datum. To cover all ranges of water level, multiple staff gauges at different elevations may be required

Advantages: Staff gauges are critical at all surface water sites to use as a visual reference in the case a sensor fails or needs to be set to the current water level.

Disadvantages: Staff gauges are located in the water and therefore are susceptible to damage from flow and debris.
