Cost: Initial & Recurring

Description: Cost is an important factor when considering a solution. There are two types of costs associated with a telemetry network, the initial cost and the recurring cost.Initial Cost: Initial cost consists of the initial investment for the purchase and installation of the real-time data collection system, which can vary greatly by the solution. An example of a low-cost system is GSM/GPRS, where the mobile provider is responsible for the installation of the network, the user is only responsible for the telemetry equipment. An example of a high initial cost system includes the use of any terrestrial radio systems in mountainous terrain where numerous communication towers need to be put in place.Recurring Cost: The recurring cost is the cost of operating and maintaining the equipment along with the network use fees. An example of use fees is seen in private mobile and satellite networks such as GSM/GPRS, Iridium, Inmarsat, and VSAT where the user is charged a rate for data transmission
