Tipping Bucket

Description: The tipping bucket rain gauge is an automated rain guage that counts incremental precipitation measurements through the use of two buckets. As rainfall falls into the funnel of the rain gauge it fills a bucket, as the bucket fills it tips. As the bucket tips a switch closure is activated and a measurement is logged. After each measurment the water is released out the bottom of the gauge. Each tip is equivelent to the bucket size and range from 0.1mm to 1mm. Not all rain gauges are created equal. Tipping bucket rain gauges may vary in cathcment diameter, bucket size and quality of material. Better gauges employ highly corrosion resistant powder coated metal or stainless steel. Tipping bucket rain gauges need maintenance and calibration. The funnel must be kept clear of debris, and insects need to be kept out of the gauge body. Calibration is easily performed, and should be performed at least on an annal basis. Calibraiton should be performed just prior to the rainy season. Tiping bucket gauges are not suitable for mixed phase or forzen precipitation, as the gauge must be heated to convert the frozen precipitaiton to liquid
