Description: The storage precipitation gauge is a more expensive yet more accurate method of measuring precipitaiton than the the tipping bucket gauge. As precipitation is collected in the storage gauge, the water is collected in a bucket and weighed. For mixed phase and forzen precipitation, antifreeze solution is placed in the bucket to prevent the water from freezing. The antifreeze mixture commonly used is propelyne glycol mixture with alcohol. Propolyne glycol is considered to be harmless to the enviornment and a significant improvement to legacy antifreeze used, containing ethylene glycol. The storage precipitation gauge is susceptible to measurement errors caused by frozen precipitaiton. Errors are commonly caused by snow bridging, in which the snow sticks to the side of the inner catch- can and bridge across the orifice, preventing collection of fresh fallen snow. Storage gauges must be routinely maintained. The storage bucket containing precipitaiton and antifreeze must be manually emptied
